Description

The Cordifolia Hardy Kiwi is absolutely the sweetest of the Arctic Kiwis. The beautiful emerald green fruits are extremely flavorful and the flesh of the kiwi is not as bitter as other kiwi berry varieties. This cold hardy kiwi plant is well-suited for northern climates and backyard growers. Cordifolia Hardy Kiwi plants are extremely vigorous, twining vines that can easily reach 20–40 feet long and 7-20 feet wide requiring a strong, heavy-duty support structure. The Cordifolia Kiwi is cold hardy to -25 degrees Fahrenheit. It grows in Zones 5-9 and requires 300 chill hours.

A hardiness zone is a geographic area defined as having a certain average annual minimum temperature, a factor relevant to the survival of many plants. In some systems other statistics are included in the calculations. The original and most widely used system, developed by the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) as a rough guide for landscaping and gardening, defines 13 zones by long-term average annual extreme minimum temperatures. It has been adapted by and to other countries (such as Canada) in various forms. A plant may be described as "hardy to zone 10": this means that the plant can withstand a minimum temperature of −1.1 to 4.4 °C (30 to 40 °F).

More Information

The Cordifolia may produce more than 100 pounds of delicious kiwi fruits after 3 to 5 years of age. A self-fertile Prolific kiwi or other male pollinator is required with the Cordifolia Hardy Kiwi vine. While the mature vine handles harsh winters perfectly, new spring shoots are vulnerable to late-season frosts, which can damage the flowers and impact that year's harvest. Another interesting fact is the vines emit an aroma similar to catnip, which may attract neighborhood cats that can damage the plant by chewing the foliage or digging near the roots.
